WVV NEWSLETTER-July 2010

June turned out to be a good month for local ride events and I enjoyed taking in the Sunrise Century with about ten other club members back on June 5th. Quite a few members rode in the Leavenworth Bikes and Brews and I heard it was a good time. I even saw a few pictures to prove that some had a great time and were busting out some dance moves to the music of the live band. I wish I could have seen that in person.

If you will allow me a small complaint about this month’s riding, it would be the relentless wind. It’s wearing me out.  We will start out the hopefully calmer July with a club meeting this Thursday on July 1. We will meet at Arlberg’s at 6:00 for a ride and then head over to Garlini’s for some refreshment. I may be at a meeting for Velo business, but somebody will be there to lead the ride. The group can decide what the route will be. I am hoping I will be able to join you during the course of the ride. If you haven’t been on one of our ride meetings, please join us. These rides have something for everyone. Those that want to hammer will wait for those that like a mellower pace.

July is also great for cycling because it is Tour de France time! The tour starts on Saturday the 3rd. To celebrate the greatest bike race and have a little fun, we are bringing back the Tour de France Fantasy game. Many thanks to Steve Johnston for putting it together again this year.  Please fill out the 2010 Game Card and send it back to wenatcheevalleyvelo@yahoo.com. Since the race starts this Saturday, you need to get the game card back as soon as possible. We will keep you updated periodically as the race progresses. The winner will get bragging rights and possibly a relic from the Velo prize bin.

Rides continue to be available for members. The EZ/Moderate Pace rides are proving to be quite popular. These rides leave from Arlberg’s at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesdays. Check Facebook and the I’m Riding tab on the club website (www.bikewenatchee.org) for other rides. Thursday evenings there are Leavenworth road rides that are moderately paced. The rides leave at 6:30 p.m. and last 1-2 hours. Meet at the Farmer's Market, next to the Library/City Hall on Highway 2. We are not just a roadie club, so post those mountain bike rides if you would like some company in the hills on the fat tires.

Club member Bill Whitlow (a.k.a. the Grey Ghost) has an interesting event planned for you more venerable riders. Bill is issuing The Senior One Hour Challenge to all of you over the age of 55. This one hour time trial will be at the course of your choice and will take place between August 28th and September 25th. For more information, call Bill at (509) 632-5037 or email him at wreic@comcast.net. You have plenty of time to get yourself in shape for the challenge.

So let’s hope for some drier and calmer weather as summer cranks up. Come join us on the club rides or post your own. Mountain biking and cross riding is great this year with the lush vegetation and well manicured trails. Be safe and I’ll see you out on the roads and trails.
